Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The general meeting of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Bengal chapter saw heated exchanges, notably between doctors Shantanu Sen and Sushant Roy. The meeting, held on Sunday, came amidst growing tensions within the association, exacerbated by the fallout from the RG Kar Medical College tax case. The event witnessed intense moments, including confrontations, folded-hand appeals, and calls for certain members to leave the venue.
A video from the venue shows Shantanu Sen and Sushant Roy engaged in a verbal exchange, with Roy surrounded by Sen's supporters. Roy, representing the North Bengal lobby, accused the group of fabricating stories. In response, Sen's supporters voiced their disapproval, defending their stance. Shantanu Sen then urged his supporters to remain calm, joining his hands in a gesture of peace and asking Roy to leave the venue.
The friction within the IMA is linked to the RG Kar Medical College tax case, with allegations of inaction by certain members when complaints arose. During the meeting, slogans of "Go Back" were reportedly directed at Sushant Roy and his faction, accusing them of being silent on critical issues, including the case's threat culture.
Additionally, three members—Tapas Chakraborty of Malda Medical College, Priyanka Rana (associated with Virupaksha Biswas), and Jaya Majumder of Kalyani Medical College—were barred from participating in the meeting. This exclusion added to the day's tension, as Chakraborty was accused of being involved in the RG Kar incident, a charge strongly resisted by the State Councilor members.
Dr. Arup Roy commented on the situation, highlighting Tapas Chakraborty's controversial presence, which prompted resistance from others at the meeting.
